Empathy is the bridge that connects our hearts to others. It’s the ability to understand and share in someone else’s feelings. But here’s the truth: We can’t show true compassion if we’re only focused on ourselves. Self-centered thinking blocks empathy. It turns us inward instead of outward—and that’s not how love works.
Empathy requires intention. It’s an active choice to pause, to care, and to try to understand what someone else is going through. “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (AMP)
Now, don’t get me wrong—this doesn’t mean we ignore our own struggles. But we shouldn’t dwell on them to the point that we miss what God is doing through us. Let’s choose to see the glass half full, trusting that our pain has purpose. God’s Word reminds us that He uses all things for our good and His glory. When we understand that truth, we’re better equipped to help those who feel hopeless.Sadly, many of us are so consumed with worry over things we can’t control that we miss the chance to be someone’s answered prayer. Empathy opens the door to kindness.
And the ability to help someone else. That’s a gift—a reason to be grateful.
